Save Miami Beach (“we,” “our,” or “us”) runs savemiamibeach.org. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use our website, send us a message, sign up for our updates, register for an event, or join our text message program, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information We Collect

Information you give us

  • Contact form: your name, email address, mobile phone number, your message, and whether you agreed to receive text messages. We keep a copy of each message, along with the IP address and browser details it was sent from, so we can spot and block spam.
  • Join form (the sign-up on our home page): your name and email address and, if you choose to give them, your mobile phone number, your ZIP code, whether you would like to volunteer, and whether you agreed to receive text messages.
  • Event registration: your first and last name, email address, and ZIP code and, if you choose to give them, your mobile phone number, whether you agreed to receive text messages, whether you would like to join our email list, how you describe yourself (for example resident or property owner), how you heard about the event, and any question you send us. We also note which link brought you to the registration page (for example, a flyer's QR code).
  • Anything else you send us, for example by email.

Information collected automatically

  • Basic technical information about your visit, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, the page that referred you, and the time of your visit. This is recorded in our server logs and by Google Analytics (see section 4).
  • Small files called cookies that the site needs in order to work (see section 4).

Team accounts. If you have an account to help run this website (for example as a writer, editor, or administrator), we keep your name, email address, and a securely encrypted password, along with your activity in the site's editing tools.

Donations. We are not currently accepting donations through this website. If that changes, payments will be handled by a payment processor, we will not see or store your full card number, and we will update this policy first.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Respond to your messages and questions.
  • Send you updates, action alerts, and event information, if you signed up to receive them.
  • Run our events: confirmations, reminders, calendar files, and online meeting links for the events you register for.
  • Send you text messages, only if you agreed to receive them (see section 3).
  • Understand how the site is used so we can improve it.
  • Keep the site secure and prevent abuse, such as filtering out spam and limiting how often a form can be submitted.
  • Comply with the law.

3. Text Messages (SMS)

  • If you give us your mobile number and check the box agreeing to texts, you consent to receive text messages from Save Miami Beach about our campaigns, action alerts, events, and updates.
  • Message frequency varies.
  • Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier and plan.
  • You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any text message. After that you will not receive further texts from us. Reply HELP for help, or email info@savemiamibeach.org.
  • Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile phone number or your text-messaging consent with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. We may share it only with service providers that deliver our messages for us, and only so they can send them.

4. Cookies and Analytics

Cookies the site needs. The site sets a short-lived session cookie and a security cookie. They keep forms working and protect against forged submissions, and they let team members stay signed in. They are not used to track you across other websites.

Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics to learn how people use the site: which pages are viewed, how long visitors stay, what kind of device and browser they use, their general location, and how they found us. Google Analytics uses cookies to recognize a browser from one visit to the next, and the information is processed by Google. We do not show advertising on this website. You can limit this by changing your browser's cookie settings, or by installing Google's opt-out add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. To learn how Google handles this data, see https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Spam protection. Our forms include a check that tells people from automated programs. It runs in your browser and looks at technical information such as your browser type, your IP address, and how the browser behaves. It is provided by a security service and is not used to advertise to you.

Team members. When a team member is signed in, we tag their visits with an internal ID number (never a name or email address) so we can tell team activity apart from public visits.

5. Who We Share Information With

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site and our outreach, and only as needed for that purpose:

  • Our web hosting and server providers.
  • The providers that deliver the emails the site sends and that handle our domain name and email forwarding.
  • An analytics provider (Google Analytics, described in section 4).
  • A security service that checks that a person, not a program, is filling in our forms.
  • The online meeting platform we use for virtual events. When you join an online event, that platform handles your participation under its own privacy policy. If we record an event, we will say so at the start.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety and rights of our community, our volunteers, or the public.

6. How Long We Keep Information

We keep messages you send us and event registrations for as long as we need them to respond, run the event, and keep records of our outreach. Messages we flag as spam are deleted after a short time. We keep your email address or mobile number on our lists until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Google keeps analytics data according to the retention settings of our Analytics account.

7. Data Security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. The site is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your Choices and Rights

  • Texts: reply STOP to any text message at any time.
  • Emails: email us at info@savemiamibeach.org and we will remove you from our lists.
  • Your information: you may ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it, by emailing info@savemiamibeach.org. We will respond within a reasonable time.
  • Cookies: you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site's forms may not work properly if you block the cookies it needs.

9. Children's Privacy

This website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

10. Links to Other Sites

Our pages link to other websites, including news sources, government pages, and social media pages. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
